Antalyaspor Chairman Mustafa Ergün's candidacy in the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ATSO) 14th Vocational Committee elections has sparked debate within the club. Criticism intensified following the heavy 4-0 defeat to Kayserispor on October 14, with concerns raised about the chairman's divided focus away from the club.
Technical Director Osman Özköylü stated that the early goal in the second minute affected the team's morale and that all four goals conceded were due to individual errors. "Our opponent had players of the quality to exploit those mistakes," Özköylü said. The loss also ended Antalyaspor's three-match winning streak.
Fan Criticism Grows
Writer İbrahim Okumamış questioned the chairman's priorities during this period. Okumamış said, "For the first time, Antalyaspor is directly involved in ATSO elections. And he is spending his energy on ATSO in the most difficult period." He emphasised that the club, which was relegated and is now failing to show the desired performance in the TFF 1. Lig, lost to Kayserispor in a match that could have changed its fate.
A similar criticism came from Murat Kayahan. Kayahan argued that the club management should focus on team performance rather than the election agenda, and that Antalyaspor should be kept away from the city's political and institutional conflicts. He also highlighted insufficient attention to fan attendance, affordable ticket prices, and increasing city-wide support for the team.
Super Lig Target and Current Status
The Super Lig promotion target announced on the club's official website on September 15 remains unchanged. The contract with Technical Director Osman Özköylü is valid until the end of the season. Ergün stated that if the target is achieved, they would like to continue working with Özköylü. Özköylü, for his part, expressed confidence in the squad's potential and stressed the need to improve in-field discipline and unity around the team.
Antalyaspor currently sits 6th in the 1. Lig with 18 points from 11 games. The team's form in the last five matches reads four wins and one loss (WLWWW). The club, trailing leaders Kayserispor by 8 points, will next face 10th-placed Bodrum FK at home on October 25. The team's upcoming fixtures can be followed on the club site.
The management states there is no verified information showing ATSO election activities directly caused the defeat and that the club's sports management continues to operate within relevant football legislation. However, after bouncing back with a 2-0 win over İstanbulspor, Antalyaspor is expected to focus all its attention on the Bodrum FK match on October 25.
